Job Summary |
This is a one-year limited term appointment. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds. The Poultry Science Department seeks candidates for a Research Fellow position to assist with ongoing research activities in poultry production and processing food safety. Duties include conducting original research to include planning, maintaining or completing research programs and/or projects involved in the discovery of new knowledge, techniques, and concepts that require advanced level scientific/research knowledge, skills and abilities following relevant policies, procedures, regulations and laws About Auburn: At Auburn, our work changes lives. Essential Functions | Essential functions include, but are not limited to: * Develop original project proposals, research designs, plans and protocols and assist in the development of complex project proposals, plans and protocols. * Design and/or conduct complex experiments, investigations and/or studies related to programs and projects in pursuit of new knowledge, techniques and concepts. * Coordinate or assist with logistics of research to include equipment, materials, and labor needs. * Collect data/samples related to own research as well as others' research and in complex cases. * Record, compile, process and analyze data/samples. * Document results and observations in writing as well as presenting results to others. * Prepare research results for publication or presentation at conferences to include performing literature reviews and writing results and discussions. * Serve as an instructor and/or supervisor to other researchers and students in area of expertise. * May maintain projects and/or coordinate funding. * Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. |
Minimum Qualifications |
Education and Experience: Level I: Doctoral Degree in Poultry, Agricultural, or Microbiology field; no experience required. Level II: Doctoral Degree in Poultry, Agricultural, or Microbiology field with 2 years experience in a Poultry Microbiology laboratory. Level III: Doctoral Degree in Poultry, Agricultural, or Microbiology field with 4 years experience in a Poultry Microbiology laboratory. Level IV: Doctoral Degree in Poultry, Agricultural, or Microbiology field with 6 years experience in a Poultry Microbiology laboratory. |

Minimum Skills and Abilities | Candidate must have experience conducting preharvest broiler chicken trials evaluating the influence of different intervention strategies for the reduction of both Salmonella and Campylobacter in the environment and in/on the birds and carcasses. Experience in this area includes rearing broiler chicken flocks in a research environment, environmental sample collection, bird necropsy, aseptic tissue collection, sample processing, isolation of both Salmonella and Campylobacter from environmental and tissue samples, compiling and statistical analysis of data, and report writing. Working with live poultry and within a poultry processing environment is expected. Knowledge of laboratory techniques and safety procedures. Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., with one often to the point of being objectionable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc. Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor. Job frequently requires standing, walking, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 10 pounds. Job occasionally requires sitting, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds. |
