Job Summary
Do you have roofing experience along with other construction and maintenance experience? If so, this job might be the one for you!Auburn University Facilities Management seeks a Construction Tech to join the team! This individual supports the construction, repair, and maintenance of Auburn University buildings, streets, sidewalks, and property. Assists in tasks for new construction, renovation, and/or maintenance projects on university buildings and property. May focus in one of the following areas: in house construction, infrastructure, or roofing.

Essential Functions
Level I:
  • Assists in a variety of carpentry tasks and installations including, but not limited to, layout, foundations, form carpentry, framing, drywall, ceilings, flooring, windows, doors and door jams, siding, and roofs in university buildings and structures throughout campus.
  • Performs excavation and demolition work as needed for renovation and construction projects.
  • Operates motorized equipment including backhoes, forklifts, skid steers, truck/trailer combinations, dump trucks, motor cranes, front-end loaders, man lifts, and other heavy equipment.
  • Maintains roofs and ceilings throughout campus. Performs minor repairs to various types of roofing systems to prevent or correct leaks and damage from penetrations in roofs.
  • Prepares and paints all manner of surfaces including, but not limited to, masonry walls, sheetrock, external surfaces, and floors. Performs installation or maintenance preparation of surfaces for paint and finishes.
  • Assists in the set up and removal of barricades, fences, and other dividers across campus.
  • Assists in the patching of holes, cracks, and other surface problems in university streets. Prepares, fills, and packs potholes on roads and streets around campus.
  • Assists in forming, pouring, and finishing cement structures; lays bricks and blocks on and around structures.
  • May be given the responsibility of individual project completion, seeing to its logistics, cleanliness, completion, and some client interactions.
  • May perform demolition of structures, portions of structure, walls, sidewalks or other related building systems. May pressure wash roofs, buildings, and sidewalks on campus.
  • May be responsible for meeting and maintaining training and certification requirements as outlined by the department's training and credentialing requirements.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.

Level II:
  • Performs and leads a variety of carpentry tasks and installations including, but not limited to, layout, foundations, form carpentry, framing, drywall, ceilings, flooring, windows, doors and door jams, siding, and roofs in university buildings and structures throughout campus.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of multiple methods for maintaining roofs and ceilings throughout campus. Plans, schedules, and leads minor repairs of various types of roofing systems to prevent or correct leaks and damage from penetrations in roofs.
  • Forms, pours, and finishes cement structures; lays bricks and blocks on and around structures. Responsible for form building and installation, concrete finish work, and site layout and measurement.
  • Assists in the set up and removal of barricades, fences, and other dividers across campus. May pressure wash roofs, buildings, and sidewalks on campus.
  • Operates motorized equipment including backhoes, forklifts, skid steers, truck/trailer combinations, dump trucks, motor cranes, front-end loaders, man lifts, and other heavy equipment.

  • Plans, schedules, and executes patching of holes, cracks, and other surface problems in university streets. Demonstrates knowledge of the proper materials and methods used in patching.
  • Responsible for individual project completion, seeing to its logistics, cleanliness, completion, and client support.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Level I - High School Diploma or equivalent

Level II - High School Diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience in carpentry, roofing, road repair, and/or concrete forming and finishing.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
Degrees accepted in lieu of experience for advanced levels, at a rate of one year relevant education per year of required experience.

Licenses & Certifications:
To be considered for Level II, finalist candidates will be required to produce documentation that verifies training and/or certification hours.
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications

Minimum Skills and Abilities
Level I:
  • Basic knowledge of construction, infrastructure, and/or roofing techniques and principles
  • Ability to operate machinery and vehicles and use basic hand tools
  • Ability to adhere to all safe work practices and standards
  • Ability to learn and progress in the field

Level II:
  • Knowledge of the proper methods, materials, and equipment to apply to each situation
  • Knowledge of best safety principles and practices
  • Ability to apply advanced skills and knowledge in area of focus
  • Ability to effectively lead others and manage projects
  • Ability to prioritize tasks to meet project deadlines
  • Client relationship management skills

  • Valid Driver's License
Desired Qualifications

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in some roofing applications preferred (new installation and/or repair work) on various roofing membranes are desired (shingle, metal, PVC, and/or modified bitumen).
  • Successful candidates will be expected to work from elevated heights using ladders and man lifts. Must be comfortable working in high places.
  • Fall protection certification also desired.
